Street fishing on the Moselle and Canal de l'Est in Epinal

Fishing the Moselle

The Moselle river in Epinal is a little-known area for street fishing. However, it offers some great possibilities.

The route

Epinal is a town in the Vosges department. It is crossed by a major tributary of the Rhine: the Moselle.

The urban itinerary is diverse and relatively complex.

I invite you to take a look at the fishing trail on the Aappma d'Epinal website, which is also the headquarters of the local federation.

In fact, the town's course is made up of several fishing reserve or no-kill zones. It should also be noted that Epinal is classified as second category and is located just downstream from a first category zone. Be careful not to get your wires crossed, especially during periods when the first category is closed.

It should also be noted that in recent years the Vosges Federation has integrated URNE reciprocity, which makes it easier to take out permits!

Hot spot

From the relatively fast Moselle to the Canal de l'Est and its small marina, there's plenty to explore and find favorable fishing conditions.

Special features of the route

There are many possibilities along the way.

The canal can be explored with power fishing. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits or shads are effective.

On the contrary, we can emphasize the current veins in the Moselle, which is home to numerous species: chub, barbel, perch, pike and even trout.

Dominant species

Pikelets

Sheepsheads

Note that small pike are very present and cut a lot of lures...

Suitable techniques and preferred lures

In the Moselle, I used light Texas rigs with a tungsten ball to fish flush with the bottom without getting too hung up in the sometimes cluttered substrate.

In the canal, swimming fish and spinnerbaits lure perch and pike over large surfaces.

Tips for success

The course is home to a large population of pike that are constantly cutting your small lures for perch or chub. It's best to use a fine titanium or Kevlar leader to avoid the sometimes numerous cuts... Dockside applombs and banks are particularly productive areas where perch like to confine themselves.
