The fishing of the rivers in the Var, beautiful fishing courses

The Var department boasts over 800 kilometers of waterways. There are first and second category rivers to discover.

The Verdon, a site apart

The Verdon is a world-famous river thanks to its Regional Nature Park and gorges. Idyllic spots for stalking brown trout or lake trout under a flock of vultures. Whether you're fly-fishing, toc-fishing or lure-fishing, fishing in the Verdon is sure to produce great results. Fishing in the gorges can be tricky because of the topography. Don't venture out just anywhere, and take all the necessary precautions. What's more, the Verdon may be subject to significant variations in flow due to the regulation of EDF hydroelectric dams. Other main rivers

  • L'Issole

The Issole is a first-category watercourse, offering excellent trout and cyprinid fishing. However, the river is subject to wide variations in flow and suffers in dry years.

  • Le Caramy

Right in the center of the department, the Caramy offers a multitude of possibilities for trout fishing enthusiasts. From No-kill courses to more crowded spots, this river of over 40 kilometers holds some very fine fish in the heart of Provence Verte.

  • Le Gapeau

Located just a few kilometers from Toulon, the Gapeau finishes its course by flowing into the sea. There are two distinct parts to this small river, the upstream section classified as 1 era category and the one downstream classified as 2nd category. All along the river, you'll find lovely places to fish for trout, the queen of the area. An easily accessible No-kill course is available in the commune of Belgentier.

  • The Argens

The Argens is one of the Var's largest rivers. It crosses the department from east to west over more than 100 kilometers. A river rich in fish species (perch, pike, trout, barbel, carp), the Argens promises great fishing, even if access is sometimes difficult.

  • The Siagne

In the very east of the département, on the border with the Alpes Maritimes, lies the Siagne. It's a river with a beautiful backdrop of hilltop villages. Trout fishing must be done with a single hook and a crushed barb.

Regulations

It is possible to fish throughout the Var department with an inter-federal licence. Throughout the Var department, salmonid fishing (rainbow trout, brown trout and Arctic char) is limited to 6 catches per day, including a maximum of 3 brown trout. The size limit for brown trout is 23 cm, except in the Argens, where the size limit is 25 cm, and in the Bas Verdon, where the size limit is 30 cm. Please note that it is strictly forbidden to fish by walking in the water before the 1 er april in 1 era category and until April 30 in the Bas Verdon.

Summer a season apart

Summer is the time of year when tourists flock to our waters, and when periods of drought can follow one another. These are two points to bear in mind if you want to enjoy freshwater fishing at the height of the summer season. Small rivers are often at very low water levels, making them impossible to fish.
