"Living River": A Podcast to Help Us Understand and Save Our Rivers

After a first season focused on the oceans, the ?Vivants? podcast returns with ?Rivière vivante,? a six-episode series dedicated to French rivers. Covering topics such as climate change, drought, biodiversity, and the restoration of aquatic ecosystems, this new season invites us to rethink our relationship with freshwater.

Rivers Vulnerable to Climate Change

While the summer of 2026 was marked by heat waves, droughts, and wildfires, the issue of water conservation has emerged as a major environmental challenge. French rivers, which are essential to biodiversity and the ecological balance of the regions, face numerous pressures: rising water temperatures, the development of riverbanks, pollution, and declining flow rates.

It is in this context that ?Rivière vivante? (Living River), the second season of the ?Vivants? podcast, takes place. Conceived by Élise Gruau, this series offers a sensory and scientific exploration of rivers, from their mouths to their sources.

Six episodes to rediscover freshwater ecosystems

How can we revitalize a degraded river? How can we rehydrate the soil, restore wetlands, and enable aquatic ecosystems to return to their natural functioning?

To answer these questions, Élise Gruau turns to experts with complementary perspectives. Hydrologists Charlène Descollonges and Fabien Esculier share their expertise on the water cycle, while naturalists Gilbert Cochet, Béatrice Kremer-Cochet, and Hugo Fontès shed light on biodiversity issues.

Artists Suzanne Husky and Luc Douzon, historian Estelle Rouquette, activist Martin Arnould, and writer Clara Arnaud also contribute to this collective reflection. Texts by Baptiste Morizot, Peter Heller, Élisée Reclus, and Frédéric Mistral accompany this journey along the water.

Restoring Rivers to Preserve Life

Beyond simply acknowledging environmental issues, ?Rivière vivante? aims to open up concrete avenues for action. Restoring ecological connectivity, preserving natural habitats, promoting water infiltration into the soil, and giving waterways back their space are all ways to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems.

Topics that directly concern fishermen?who are the first to witness changes in aquatic environments?as well as anyone interested in nature conservation.

Following ?Living Ocean,? which explored the major balances of the marine environment, this new season reminds us just how much the health of rivers determines the health of all life.

?Rivière vivante,? a six-episode series airing throughout the fall of 2026, to help us better understand our waterways and envision their future.
