Fishing in Toulouse, a legendary spot for street fishing

Fishing in Toulouse

Toulouse is one of those cities where street fishing was born. There's plenty to do between the canals and the Garonne in the prefecture of the Occitanie region!

Fishing routes

Capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region, the pink city is criss-crossed by the Garonne River and numerous canals.

These are still in operation, and many barges still ply the waters. Three canals converge on the filter basin: the Canal du Midi, the Canal de Brienne and the Canal Lateral à la Garonne. The routes are all very pleasant.

Apart from the Canal Latéral, which follows the freeway, the other canals are shaded by tall plane trees, bringing a little greenery to the middle of Toulouse.

The Garonne River crosses the city from south to north, offering accessible, paved quays.

Best spots

The Canal du Midi is a great place to catch big pike-perch. The locks are all good spots.

The Brienne canal, with its faster, clearer waters, is home to some fine perch, pike and chub.

The Canal Latéral and the Garonne are both full of surprises. The problem is that most of these canals are not all good at the same time. It's very common to find yourself on a spot that's completely off, while another area is catching fish. This is the harsh reality in Toulouse, and you shouldn't hesitate to ask the locals "how the fishing is going" to make sure you don't miss out.

Special features

Toulouse's route is very varied.

Each canal has its own peculiarities, and it is possible to move from fast prospecting fishing with swimming fish to slow fishing by scratching marked spots (locks, barges, roots, etc.).

Techniques and lures to use

For exploratory fishing, an M rod fitted with a spinnerbait or a swimmer fish is ideal for prospecting and finding active predators.

Perch fishing can be very technical, often requiring slow fishing and precise combing of structures.

Lightweight Texan mounts can be used to press into roots or at the foot of locks where branches accumulate.

Our tips for success

It's a good idea to have two rods to fish differently: an ultra-light rod for using small soft lures suitable for stalking perch and chub and a medium to medium-heavy rod for pike-perch, pike and black-bass.
