Mercury Fishing Cup: Team Fasquel David and Fasquel Lenny

David and Lenny Fasquel have been fishing competitively as a family, fishing and competing from father to son. Their passion for lure fishing for predators led them to take part in the first Mercury Fishing Cup. David looks back on this event and their fishing career.

Hello David, can you introduce yourself to Fishing.news readers?

Fishing techniques: all types of fishing with hard or soft lures, with a preference for black bass, zander and pike.

Can you tell us about your early days in fishing?

I was always brought up on the water by a family of fishermen, learning from father to son. I did the same with my son Lenny and my youngest son Davy, and they were immediately hooked on this passion.

When, how and why did you decide to take up competitive fishing?

I've always been a competitor at heart, with a constant desire to surpass myself, both in sport and in all the activities that go with it. I started out as a competitive angler at the age of 15, with a level of 2nd national.

After a complicated period with a bad back, I switched to predator fishing, where the apprenticeship with my son has seen us totally explode at national level, with many victories to show for it. It's a real pleasure to share it with your son, especially when the results are there!

What do you think of competition in general?

The world of competitive fishing is still very tough psychologically. We've learnt everything on our own, but sharing with other good teams has strengthened us to become a very good team, with the recognition that goes with it.

The overall atmosphere remains very good, but it's a pity we haven't had a championship like in recent years, with multi-species competitions to define a multi-species French champion (the basis).

What did taking part in the first Mercury Fishing Cup mean to you?

Taking part in the first edition of the Mercury Fishing Cup gave us the opportunity to take part in a major event, which is very rare, and all the more so with a title at stake. Even if the local aspect of the event means that teams from further afield don't stand much of a chance.

What do you think of this first edition?

A top 10 finish in the competition is a good thing for us. The aim is always to win, but the field is still very strong.

Which boats and equipment do you use?

We sail with a 5-meter smart liner equipped with a 40 HP Mercury engine (a real marvel).

We use Illex and Gunky rods, our current sponsors.

  • Fishing technique: vertical and linear (Magic shad and Mosquito lures).
  • Garmin Echomap 102SV and 122SV fishfinders, including of course the live sensor - a revolution in modern fishing.

Your fondest memory, or anecdote, from the Mercury Fishing Cup?

A very good start on the second day, putting us in the lead in the first hour.

Will you be attending the second edition on Lac de Vassivière?

Yes, we'll be there for the second edition with our sights set on the top step of the podium.

Any advice for anglers hoping to take part in the Mercury Fishing Cup one day?

Training and perseverance for the chance to win a major event. An event masterfully managed by the FFPS and Yann Diquerreau of Mercury Marine France, with the participation of numerous partners.

Finally, a big thank you to all our sponsors, and of course the family who cheers us on at every competition.
