How to easily make a float tube probe holder?

A simple and efficient probe holder

Although there are several well-made models on the market, it is possible to easily make a sonar and transducer mount for your float tube. Let's find out how.

Material needed

  • A rectangular aluminium tube of about 40 cm

  • Two aluminum or stainless steel plates

  • Four aluminum or stainless steel rivets

  • A stainless steel screw and nut

  • A strap with a tightening buckle

  • The probe

Manufacturing

The first step is to attach the probe to the end of the tube. To do this, simply rivet the plates on each side, making sure to leave them protruding just the right length so that the probe can be attached to their end.

The probe is then fixed perpendicular to the tube with the stainless steel screw, tightening the nut.

Using a hacksaw or a disc cutter, we make them slots in the tube to pass the strap. It is necessary to present the tube and the probe next to the float-tube to see at which level to make these notches.

Your bracket is finished. Simply place it next to the float tube and tighten the strap around it. If the float tube has straps on the top of the flange, you can pass the sonar bracket underneath. The bracket strap can also be used to secure the bracket at two points and hold it firmly in place.

This attachment allows you to have the sonar unit at the right distance to read it easily and not get in the way when fishing.

Quick to set up and economical, this home-made stand will perfectly hold your sounder and your probe throughout your sessions!

Electrical installation

Some small 12V batteries are equipped with quick connectors, others are not, as is the case for motorcycle batteries that have screw terminals. To facilitate the connections of the sounder and charger at the end of the session, it is sufficient to make a small assembly with lugs that are screwed on the battery. The lugs are attached to cables of about ten centimeters at the end of which are male quick connectors.

The female terminals are located on the charger and the sonar unit's power cable, so it's easy to switch from one to the other. A fuse holder can be added to the plus to ensure safety in the event of a short circuit.

The ease of installation of this probe and these electrical connections once again reinforce the accessibility of the float-tube, including the accessories!
