What are the essential equipments of the float-tube fisherman?

The float-tube fisherman must also be well equipped!

In addition to the float-tube's facilities, it is important to choose the right equipment for the fisherman to practice at best on this boat. Fins, pants and vests, how to choose ?

Fins

Sometimes sold as a pack with the boat, the fins are very important because they are the engine of the float-tube! The choice of the fins is made according to several criteria. The first one to take into account is the attachment system, it can be adjustable with a strap, or with a fixed size shoe. The advantage of the adjustable system is that it can be adapted to the size of the foot, whether it is naked as in summer, or with a neoprene sock or waders as in winter. On the other hand, fixed socks are more comfortable, but make it mandatory to wear the same sock/waders whatever the season.

Another characteristic to choose is the length. There are very short fins, and others that are much longer, such as spearfishing fins for example. Short fins require more movement, but are less tiring and more discreet in shallow water.

While long fins allow you to cover greater distances with wide strokes. However, they require the angler to be in a certain physical condition to be able to endure throughout a session.

Pants

Between comfort and safety, it is important to choose the right socks for winter float-tube sessions. The question does not arise in summer when the water is warm, a simple pair of shorts is enough.

Two solutions are available to float fishermen, waders, and diving/shooting pants + shoes. Waders are totally waterproof, whether they are made of neoprene to insulate directly from the cold, or of pvc/breathable material under which it is possible to wear different layers to protect oneself from the cold. The only disadvantage of waders is that they can quickly fill up with water in case of a fall. Although this is very rare, some anglers are apprehensive about this and prefer the latter.

The neoprene pants for scuba diving/hunting. This type of clothing protects very well against the cold and is very comfortable since it sticks to the skin. It is also safer and it is possible to put a little water in them for mid-season sessions when the angler would be too hot.

The vest

As for the top, it is easier to dress more or less warmly depending on the conditions. However, one accessory can be essential to ensure the safety of fishermen: the life jacket.

Whether it is made of foam or inflatable, with manual or automatic release, it must be worn whenever the angler feels unsure or when he is in difficult environments, with a lot of current, or in dangerous weather conditions. Although it is rare to fall over in a float tube, an accident can happen. And if, in summer and in calm water, it is easy for an angler to get back on his boat, it is not necessarily the case in winter or when there is a lot of current.
