How to choose your float-tube to start fishing ?

Choosing the right float tube model is very important!

Once you have understood all the advantages of float-tube fishing, it is easy to take the plunge, but choosing the right float-tube is not as simple!

The different types of float-tubes

There are mainly two materials and systems of manufacture of float tubes: the PVC models or the models with air chamber.

These have a fabric envelope in which an inner tube is located, on the same principle as a bicycle wheel! Generally less expensive, they have the advantage of being easily repaired and/or changing one of the inner tubes in case of a puncture. However, they are less durable and require more rigorous maintenance.

On the other hand, PVC float tubes are made of a single material, in the same way as a semi-rigid boat. This "bladder" is usually compartmentalized to guarantee safety in case of a puncture. The PVC material accepts a higher pressure and becomes very rigid once inflated, guaranteeing a better resistance, but above all accepting a much higher embarked weight and offering a better stability!

PVC models have definite advantages over chambered models, although the price may be a barrier for users looking for their new boat!

The basic equipment

Once the material of the socks is chosen, it is interesting to look at the elements sold with the float. Indeed, all the small indispensable accessories can represent a non-negligible cost. Generally speaking, all float tubes are sold with a bag for transport and storage. However, among the practical accessories that are not necessarily included, we find :

  • The transport straps, which allow to put the float-tube on the back to go to the launching area.

  • The apron (with or without a measuring rod) which is placed over the fisherman's legs

  • The additional bakkans have the advantage of being able to stay filled since they can be removed from the float tube, which is impossible when they are integrated.

  • A cane holder sometimes integrated on one of the two sides

As for the seat, it is always provided, but depending on the model, it can be of different quality, inflatable or not, with an inflatable backrest too. The inflatable seats are generally more comfortable, and especially much less cumbersome to store.

It is also necessary to think about future additional equipment that can be added easily or not, depth sounder, rod holder, waders etc. The float tubes with straps or other lashing rings are then much more practical to be customized.

Height and weight

Although the above mentioned criteria are the most important to take into account, there is one that should not be neglected: the size of the float-tube!

Indeed, several sizes are proposed on the market, the most common is around 1m50 long for 1m10 or 1m20 wide. In most cases this size is more than enough and allows to go everywhere.

However, some manufacturers offer models up to 1m80 long, wider and with much larger diameter bladders. These models are intended either for fishermen with a rather strong body or a large size, and who thus need a greater stability, or for fishermen who wish to make long sessions and need to embark a lot of material. Indeed, these XL float-tube models are more spacious and offer more storage space.
