Some species of fish represent an inevitable step in the journey of a globe-trotting fisherman, and the peacock bass is clearly part of these species highly coveted by sport fishermen!

The Amazon

Brazil, with its huge surface and its important area of Amazonian forest, is one of the references when it comes to finding a destination where to discover the famous peacock bass. However, it should be noted that its neighboring countries are also beautiful destinations, such as Colombia, the Republic of Guyana (not to be confused with French Guyana) or Peru, and it is very relevant to look at what these destinations offer depending on what you are looking for as a trip.

A multitude of species

There are fifteen species of peacock bass, divided by region. The most popular species and the most sought after for the record sizes it can reach is the temensis, which is not found on all destinations. You must therefore choose your destination according to the species you wish to target.

Fishing in Brazil

The city of Manaus is considered the gateway to the Amazon and the Rio Negro River. This is most likely where you will have to pass through in order to go to cities like Barcelos or Santa Isabella, and to reach the fishing areas. From my experience, it is difficult to find people who speak and understand English, a good base of Portuguese language seems to me essential for those who want to go on an adventure, and find local guides for the day, for example.

The second solution is to go through a tourist agency, which according to the formulas can even take care of you from your arrival in Manaus. There are several types of services, like a fixed lodging, and every day you leave by boat with your guide to fish the surroundings. Another solution is to leave in a hotel boat, which allows you to venture further and go up more isolated rios, with less fishing pressure.

When to go?

The best period is between November and February. This corresponds to the rainy season so it is not guaranteed to have sunshine every day.
