To diversify my catches, when I travel, I don't hesitate to bring my rockfishing equipment. It consists of a UL rod, with a power between 1.5 and 8 grams and a spinning reel in size 2500. This combo allows me to use small lures between 1.5 and 3 inches, to look for small fish.
Moreover, without talking about fishing trip, it is a didactic technique that I recommend, especially to start fishing with lures, or to diversify and discover other species, simply.
To return to Colombia and more widely to the Amazonian rivers, here, it is essential to use steel leaders to resist the teeth of the many piranhas present.
This leader is not disturbing as far as discretion is concerned, the majority of the species is not sensitive to this detail. To make my leaders, I use steel with a strength of 15 lbs, with a swivel on one side, and a clip, to attach a lead head, on the other. This set-up allows me to keep a maximum of flexibility with small lures and to minimize the damage to their swim.
Because of the piranhas, in addition to the steel leaders, it is necessary to have a good stock of soft lures. To avoid carrying a lot of pouches, I put a selection of lures and sinker heads in the same box, so it's easy to access and quick to change lures, which often happens.
With the rod and reel, the equipment for fishing in ultra light should be barely one kilogram, so it is not penalizing in the luggage to take such a set.
