Native to Central Asia, chènevis comes from a plant called Cannabis Sativa (hemp) and related to the hop and fig tree. It belongs to the cannabinacae family. This seed has been cultivated for over 6,000 years. Before the twentieth century, more than 75% of the paper production was based on hemp. Indeed, hemp plants produce four times more paper fiber than trees. At that time, people also cultivated hemp seeds to feed themselves, but also to feed animals. From these seeds, men produced edible oil, lamp oil and polish oil, then this plant was banned.
Nutritional qualities of hemp seed

Preparation of the hemp seed

However, it is recommended to change the water several times in order to avoid that the hemp seed goes rancid (especially when it is hot). 15 minutes of cooking is enough and it is not necessary to cook it at high temperature at the risk of destroying certain nutritive values.
Besides in seed, chènevis can be used in oil for various applications (soaking, topping, making boiliesâeuros¦). The chènevis can be ground, crushed and roasted. In this case, this coarse-grained flour can be used to make balls or to include it in a groundbait (feeder, stick mix...).
