Trout fishing with lure in dam lake, dare the metal jig !

Metal jigs are used for sea fishing and perch fishing, but they are also very effective on trout, especially in lakes!

To stand out from all that is generally used to fish for trout in dam lakes, some perch anglers use metal jigs which sometimes allow to unblock the situation and this thanks to many advantages!

What is a metal jig?

A jig is a lead lure that can vary in shape and weight and is usually painted and varnished to make it more attractive and durable.

Its shape can be quite wide which will make it glide and flutter on the way down, we talk about a "slow" jig. It can also be much more tapered, which will allow it to descend very quickly in the water layer.

The advantages of the metal jig

1) The first big advantage of the metal jig is related to its high density. Indeed, its high density allows the metal jig to reach record distances on the casts, and thus to fish areas that are not or little prospected by other fishermen. This density is also very interesting when the fish are far away but only active on small preys. For the same size, a jig will be heavier than any other type of lure.

2) Second, the jigs, usually covered with a holographic film, emit powerful flashes of light that attract trout from quite a distance.

3) Finally, the third interesting point about jig fishing is the depth of fishing. Unlike a spoon or a swimmer fish, a metal jig allows to prospect all the layers of water in a precise way.

A rod with a power of 3-12g for a length of more than 2.10m is ideal for trout fishing in lakes, including jigging. It is important to respect the power of your rod when you choose the weight of your jigs, in order to be efficient at casting and not to risk breakage.

Several animations are possible with metal jigs. The slow jigs can be animated in a slow retrieve with small strokes of the scion, all interspersed with pauses. During this recovery phase, when the jig is held back, it flickers a lot and it is not uncommon at all to record hits at this time.

For longer and tapered jigs, they can be animated more quickly to trigger the aggressiveness of active trout. A fairly fast linear movement punctuated by very dry jerks will make the swim very erratic. This animation generally allows quality hits and crazy sensations!

Prefer assistant hooks to cock your metal jigs

Sea anglers have been used to them for a long time, assists hooks are really indispensable for trout fishing with jigs. These simple hooks mounted on a small piece of braid allow to limit enormously the stalls. Thanks to the flexibility of the braid, the trout can not take support, even on big jumps, and thus does not unhook. The other positive point of these simple hooks is that they limit to the maximum the injuries on the fish, in particular if the barbs are crushed.
