Fishing for peacock bass in Colombia: day 6, the dominance of jerkbait minnow

On this third day of fishing, change of sector, we alternate the fishing zones with half of our group, and it is our turn to go to explore the lagoons of the bottom of the sector.

For this third day, as I was not convinced of the lures tried so far, and that it is a little the same thing for all the group, I decide to take out a lure which had brought me a lot of fish during a previous trip to Brazil, the jerkbait minnow of about fifteen centimeters. Very quickly, the catches are linked, with the majority of butterfly pray on the edges.

At the bottom of a very small lagoon, near a drowned tree, I hooked a huge peacock bass, which unfortunately broke my lure. When you miss a fish because of the equipment, it's quite frustrating because there is not much you can do about it, while after a mistake of your own, you can only learn to improve. Anyway, I have confirmation that this is the lure to use, so I take something similar to continue my day.

Adjusting your brake

When fishing with lures of this type, where the animation is fast and the bites are sudden, you have to set the drag very tightly so that the fish hooks itself, because even with the best possible reflexes, it is impossible to hook this type of attack. In my case, the reel was very tight, the two possible errors are either that I did not loosen the brake to relieve the equipment, or that the lure is not designed to undergo such treatment.

Fishing for peacock bass does not require a very powerful equipment from a rod and reel point of view, however, it is necessary that everything that composes the line and the lure has a resistance of at least 60 Lbs, to resist a strongly tightened brake.

What happens next

To return on this day of fishing, in another lagoon, always on a jerkbait minnow, I catch a big male, with this so characteristic bump, which makes me forget quickly my frustration of the morning.

The minnow jerkbaits that I prefer are the tapered ones, about 15 centimeters long and swimming between 50 and 80 centimeters deep. They can explore the edges and pass over submerged trees without difficulty. This type of lure is generally found in the sea fishing section, and is designed for bass and barracuda fishing.

Debriefing of the day

The end of this third day announces that we arrived at the half of the stay. My mistake was to insist on using the same lures the first two days. At the beginning of the trip, it is better to try several approaches, even if it means sacrificing this day, to quickly find the lures that work, because the days are counted.

Thus, we leave with a good idea of the strategy to adopt for the continuation of the stay. The other important thing is to share at the end of the day, with the group of fishermen, the observations made to make everyone benefit from it.
