The Canary Islands are located off the coast of northwest Africa. Belonging to Spain and therefore included in the Schengen area, access is very easy by plane. This destination will delight fishermen in search of exoticism.

Fishing in the Canary Islands

Formed by volcanoes, the Canary Islands with their fantastic landscapes are surrounded by other small underwater volcanoes. These volcanoes create rocky areas perfectly adapted for different benthic fish. You can find exotic fish, but also fish typical of our French waters.

The abundance of food and the water temperature form an ecosystem where the growth and development of fish is very fast. Many IGFA records have been set here and many other trophy fish still swim in these waters.

Out of the summer season, the airlines' rates are very affordable and the cost of living in the country is still reasonable.

From the edge

Fishing on the Canary Islands is governed by the tidal cycle. In spite of the low coefficients, the movement of water makes the fish active, day and night. The majority of the species found on board are fish that are also found in our waters. Barracuda, sars or pelagic fish are present in abundance and the low fishing pressure makes them all the easier to catch.

The almost tropical temperatures offer the possibility to fish very efficiently with surface lures. Fishing with natural baits allows to catch a great number of species with fantastic colors and can reserve some very nice surprises given the phenomenal quantity of giant stingrays. Some of them exceed 2 meters in circumference and are extremely powerful fighters.

Fishing by boat

From a boat, vertical jigging gives very good results. Many combative species are present, in particular white trevally, which are very strong in defense. Dentex and paddlefish are also present in abundance on the rocky heads. Many modern fishing techniques such as the tenya or the slow jig are very little practiced there and work particularly well on sparidae.

The Atlantic Ocean can be capricious and it is not uncommon for a nice swell to be present on the fishing grounds, which can be a great advantage to get the fish active. If you want to avoid strong sea conditions, it is best to avoid the winter season, which is often stormy.

If you are interested in big game fishing, some guides offer the possibility to fish for very big bluefin tuna as well as the famous blue marlin in offshore trolling. It is not uncommon to see sharks and many cetaceans near the coast, an incredible experience that you must witness at least once in your life!
