To fish the big lakes of Extremadura is to fish in another dimension, enormous stretches of water that contain very big fish.

The Lake District

The region of Extremadura contains many lakes of dams used for the production of electricity and the supply of water for crops. These dams are built on the basin of the Guadiana River, a river that crosses the Iberian Peninsula before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. One of the regions of Europe where nature is best preserved.

The lake of Orellana

Renowned for its pike population and trophy catches, Lake Orellana also contains many black bass and beautiful carp. The pike-perch population has been growing for some years. The lake has a gentle slope and the bottom is covered with grass beds, an ideal biotope for pike fishing enthusiasts. The lake of Orellana has the "Bandera azul", the Spanish blue flag, which means that the water quality is good and usually very clear. It covers 5,800 hectares and is 40 kilometers long.

The lake of the Serrena

The lake of La Serrena is the biggest lake in Spain. It extends over 14,000 hectares, clear waters, spectacular scenery and beautiful fish in perspective. The Serrena lake has a nice population of black-bass and very big pikes. You can also fish for barbel, comizo or bercerro, and channel catfish.

The lake of Garcia de Sola

With its 3,500 hectares, the lake of Garcia de Sola is the smallest of the large lakes in the region. It is the ideal lake for fishermen who are new to fishing in Extremadura. The waters are usually less clear than in other lakes. This lake has a large population of black bass, but there is also a good population of pike, carp and zander. For those who like to fish for pike and pike-perch, bleak and carp are abundant.

The lake of Alcantara

The lake of Alcantara, it is 10 400 hectares for 96 kilometers long, as much to say that it is an immense garden to prospect. A real jewel with its islands and its tower in the middle of the lake. Black bass fishing is king in this place. You can also fish for zander, pike, catfish and barbel.

The lake of Cijara

Lake Cijara covers 6,800 hectares, a lake with spectacular scenery with cliffs and beaches. The fishing of big fish is regular on the lake. There are some very nice pikes, many black bass, and a good density of comizo barbels and pike perch. A lake where you can fish under cover in bad weather.

The lake of Alanje

The lake of Alanje was only built in 1992 and is still little known by fishermen. A stretch of water of 5,140 hectares where you can make very beautiful fishing with the blow or the feeder. A lake populated by huge carassin and in very large numbers, of barbel comizo, but also of pike and black-bass.

The support of a fishing guide

Fishing such large lakes can be tricky if you are not used to it. Fishing from the shore on foot is still possible, but very uncertain. Fishing very large lakes and biotopes different from those you are used to fishing is not something you can improvise, especially if you want to make the most of your fishing trip abroad. It is best to be able to explore these large areas by boat, as the distances between the different spots are great. For a first stay, it is best to hire a local fishing guide. You will find many fishing camps with French guides.
