3 rod and reel sets for boat fishing in the Canaries

Boat fishing in the Canaries is a very interesting experience when lure fishing. The bites are numerous and the fish combative, but you need to be well equipped before setting out. Let's take a look at the three essentials for success.

Slow jigging kit

Slow jigging is a very effective technique in the Canaries. You can easily target all the medium and large predator species in these waters, from white jacks close to the bottom to open-water fish such as tassergal. However, the average size and power of the fish require suitable, sturdy equipment.

An ideal rod will be at least 30 lb, relatively short, 2m10 at most, with a fast enough action to sting the fish and prevent them from scraping the volcanic rock. Equipped with a size 300 casting reel, capable of exerting good pressure when fighting with a powerful drag. The braid you can use doesn't have to be very fine, unlike in the Mediterranean for example. Give priority to strength, a minimum of 30 lb to match the power of the rod, as fish don't mind if your leader is long enough.

The tenya and madaï ensemble

Fishing with baited lures is a great way to keep busy during the day's slack periods, especially at the hottest times of the day and when the tide is out. The surprises can be considerable, and there's no shortage of big fish, including various species of sparidae such as pagres and dentis. An effective tenya and madaï rod in the Canaries can handle lure weights of up to 120 grams, as the current can be strong in rough seas.

Whether you fish with spinning or casting lures, long rods are best, from 2m10 to 2m40 depending on conditions. For the reel, size 2500 or 3000 for spinning and 200 for casting. Once again, your braid should be sufficiently strong, around 16 hundredths and preferably in 8 strands. The diameter of your leader will vary according to the species you'll be fishing, but a minimum diameter of 26 hundredths offers sufficient safety.

Heavy jigging set

To stalk the Canaries' biggest fish, you'll need to be well equipped if you want to take the fish out. Big groupers and amberjacks are frequent catches, although the majority of hits are jacks, barracudas and pelamids. However, it would be a shame not to be able to take out the big fish when you want to target them. Finer fishing will be more interesting for most bites, but not for big fish.

A short, powerful spinning rod, 1m80 for 50 or 60 lb, will be your best bet to handle the fight. The reel should also be powerful, have a good drag and a capacity of at least 200 metres. Size 14,000 or 16,000, filled with 55 or 60 lb braid and a leader of at least 60 lb, or even 80 lb for rocky areas.
