In the Canary Islands, you can fish for exotic species as well as classic Mediterranean ones. Some fish are really worth targeting, whether for their size or combativeness, such as white trevally, giant rays or other pretty fish.

The white carangue

If you've never had the chance to pit your wits against one of the species of trevally found in tropical waters, you'll surely have no idea how powerful they can be. In the Canaries, one of these species is present in large numbers: the white trevally, also known as the toothed trevally. It's a very aggressive fish that can weigh over 15 kilos and offer fights worthy of the biggest sport fish.

The most effective fishing technique is the slow jig, although the classic jig is also effective. It is generally found at depths of between 10 and 60 metres, in shoals of several individuals of similar size. The average size of the catch is around 5 to 7 kilos and puts a strain on 30 lb tackle.

Giant stingrays

For anglers who don't want to leave by boat and prefer to stay on the coast, there's no shortage of things to do. The presence of a multitude of skate species makes for a muscular version of landing fishing. You'll need a sturdy rig, otherwise you'll break frequently. The most common rays are the stingrays, which come in all shapes and sizes, as they are not subject to any fishing pressure.

The average size of an individual fish is around one meter in wingspan, but the biggest ones easily exceed 2 meters in width and over 100 kg. Fights can be very long, especially if you can't stop the fish once you've cast it. Fishing for them is quite simple: just place a large piece of fish a few meters from the shore, near the exit of a port, and wait for it to pass by. Their sense of smell is highly developed and it's not unusual to hit several in a very short space of time.

XXL versions of Mediterranean fish

Although the Canary Islands abound in species not found on our coasts, some species are common, except for one detail: their size. Compared to the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands' fish are very rarely caught. This results in record sizes for a multitude of species. In fact, the Northern Isles hold a large number of IGFA records for the largest fish of any species.

These records include tassergal, liche, various species of tuna, as well as many sparids, such as denti or humphead wrasse. The various Canary Islands are the best places to beat one of your previous Mediterranean records!
