The department of Var and its proximity to the Ligure, a warm marine current, moderates the winter season and gives rise to great summer heat. This current offers a large quantity of food to marine species.
Pelamide, a great fighter

Pelagic fish, in particular the pelagic, are present in large quantities thanks to the food and forage fish brought by the Ligure. The pelagic fish is a fish that can be found near the coasts of Var, from May to November. These fish are sometimes discreet, but when they start hunting, the surface boils.
The average size of the pelamids is about 1 kg 500 to 2 kg, but it is frequent to capture individuals up to 3 kg. It is a fantastic fighter that will not hesitate to take tens of meters of line during a start. The pelagic can be fished from the shore, in shore-jigging, or in boat on hunting and trolling.
Squid in large numbers

Deep-sea mollusk, squid is a very fun species to fish and is present in very large quantities near the coast. The ideal season to target them is winter, from November to March, when they come to reproduce in shallow waters. We can catch them in large quantities at the beginning of the winter, then the number of catches decreases and the size increases at the end of the season.
The vast majority of the schools are made up of squids measuring between 20 and 30 cm, but the largest ones can exceed 50 cm. The most effective technique is undoubtedly the bichi-bachi the squid is increasingly practiced on our coasts thanks to its efficiency. In boats, squids are also fished to be used as a live fish, very efficient on all the big predators such as the denti, the amberjack or the bluefin tuna.
The big barracudas

Like many places on the Mediterranean coast, the Var is full of beautiful barracuda populations. This fish is fished in winter from the shore with jerk minnow lures, as well as in summer with big surface lures. There is a large population of fish between 70 cm and 1 meter and a nice quantity of fish up to 1 meter 20.
The barracuda particularly appreciates to be placed around the rocky heads and at the entrance of the ports. In rocky coast, it is a fish which becomes very aggressive when the sun sets and rises. Its periods of activity are generally very short, but very intense and the bites can follow one another for about thirty minutes and stop completely for the rest of the night or the day.
This fish fascinates many lure fishermen who particularly appreciate rubbing shoulders with this moody fish, much like a freshwater zander fisherman would.
