Trout fishing and landing net, accessories and tips to know

To facilitate the use of the landing net, there are small accessories and tricks to make life easier at the water's edge, such as the importance of the magnet or the interest of a folding connector... Here are some of them that I use even in competition!

The indispensable magnet!

The magnet is an accessory that goes hand in hand with the use of a landing net, especially for shore anglers. The magnet allows you to hold the net firmly, but above all to draw the net in a flash to shorten a fight and to dry a fish.

The magnet can be positioned in several places depending on the angler's preferences and the desired ergonomics.

The magnet can be placed at the end of the bow of the landing net head, especially for a snowshoe landing net. The snowshoe hangs down and the handle is easily reachable. However, beware of hooks or line that may get caught in the magnet or in the broken ring...

Another position of the magnet is commonly used, at the end of the handle. The disadvantage is that the net is exposed to brambles and other vegetation especially when fishing in narrow streams for example...

Finally, for long handles, especially those used in competitions, it is possible to fix the magnet firmly on the handle with electrician's tape. This allows you to draw quickly and to have the handle of the landing net always at hand.

The secret weapon, the electrician's tape

The electrician's tape is a trick used by many competitors. It allows, as mentioned above, to fix the magnet wherever you want on the handle.

It is especially useful for securing long telescopic or interlocking handles. At the joint between several elements of the handle, the electrician's tape allows to "lock" the joints which cannot turn or unscrew. It also allows to secure and lock the screwing of the head on the handle.

This is especially true in competition when you catch a big fish or when you chain fish.

The importance of drying the landing net

Drying the landing net is an important step for the life of the net. It allows to avoid germs and to avoid contaminating the fish from one spot to another.

This also prevents bad odors and extends the life of the net by preventing mold.

At the end of each session or in the car, it is necessary to put the sponge in a way that it is ventilated and that it dries quickly.

Adapting the handle and the head

Few fishermen are aware of it, but it is possible to easily modulate landing net heads and handles thanks to standardized screw threads. It is possible to change the depth of the net, the size of the head or its material.

It is the same for the handle with which you can juggle between the length or the material (carbon, aluminum...) according to your needs.

The folding connectors

Last but not least, the folding connectors are very practical accessories, especially for anglers on board. It is an articulated elbow that is placed between the head and the handle. It allows you to reduce the size of the rod by keeping the head folded towards the handle while opening the head with a sharp movement when catching a fish.

Repair a small hole or customize your landing net

To repair a net with a small hole in a few meshes, I successfully use rislans (or serflex). Simply thread through two meshes and tighten to close, like a suture. It's foolproof, discreet and the hooks don't get caught in it! There are different colors of rislans in translucent or black, the color of most nets!

The rislans also allow you to securely and cleanly attach a split foam tube to the frame of the landing net head to make it float. This is very practical for float-tube or kayak anglers.
