How to approach trout fishing with lures in reservoirs?

Large volumes of water, stable and constant conditions and an abundance of food provide the ideal conditions to see salmonids grow. These piscivorous trout (feeding almost exclusively on fish) are powerful and sometimes fussy predators that need to be decided.

We are not talking about lake trout, even if these trout live in a lake. It is indeed a question of fario trout (salmo trutta) which were "imprisoned" in a lake of dam and which evolve between the lake and the tributary water course.

Lake trout (salmo trutta lacustris) are older fish, which evolved naturally in natural lakes after the last ice age (Lake Geneva trout, Icelandic trout from thingvellir...). Lake trout have an even faster growth. Their life cycles and habits are quite similar.

Find the fish

In these large volumes of water, it is necessary to find the fish which can evolve on the surface as well as on the bottom in sometimes nearly 30m of water! It is therefore often necessary to use sinking lures, regardless of the type. Sinking lures will allow you to fish in all layers of water and to get a first touch giving a precious indication!

What's more, these dense lures cast far to cover even more surface area. After the lure hits the water, just let it sink for a while.

The positions to prospect in priority are the water arrivals (tributaries, brooks...) and the vertical structures. Beaches and large areas should be prospected quickly to find active fish in transit.

Suitable lures

The sinking swimmers are very present and allow to beat the ground (and the volume). They are ideal to find active fish quickly. Once the lure has reached the desired depth, we animate it nervously in twitch (dry blow of scion of low amplitude) to disorientate it and give it an irregular swim. It is often judicious to make pauses more or less long to offer an opportunity of attack.

The wobbling spoon, an essential lure for trout fishing in reservoirs.

Wobbling spoons are also a must. These curved metal lures allow for hollow fishing and are real trout magnets. They can be a real lifesaver when conditions are difficult or in summer. The ripples allow you to fish slowly and patiently for promising spots.

Soft lures such as shad or finesse allow slow and methodical fishing near the bottom when it is necessary to dislodge and solicit trout in the structures. Soft lures offer a wide range of vibrations, shapes and colors to trigger trout. Do not hesitate to play on these parameters to generate hits.

Finally, we had very good results with metal jigs, rather intended for light sea fishing. They are unrivalled for fishing very deep and for exploring vertical structures such as bridge piers, cliffs, walls... The models between 5 and 15g are usable on common trout rods and have the size of prey for salmonids.
