The ideal equipment for trout fishing with lures in reservoirs

Trout fishing in reservoirs differs in many ways from trout fishing in rivers, especially because of the almost systematic use of sinking lures and a rod with measurements and technical characteristics making it relatively versatile.

The cane

A rod of at least 2.10 m allows long casts and better control of the banner. The power of the rod should ideally be a ML (Medium Light) or M (Medium) with a strong but not too fast tip action. A casting range between 3 and 15 grams is ideal. The rod should remain flexible and progressive enough to handle lures as different as swimfish, wobbling spoons, soft lures or casting jigs!

The reel

For the reel, it is also necessary to bet on the versatility. An intermediate ratio is ideal but a high ratio is not contraindicated. To balance your rod, a reel of size 2000, 2500 or 3000 compact will be perfect.

Line body and leader

With the idea of fishing far and deep by reducing the diameter of his line, I would opt for a fine braid in 8 strands and a fluorocarbon leader of at least 2m. Dams are lakes with very mineral bottoms and banks and it is absolutely necessary to avoid that the braid rubs against rocks. A long leader is essential and requires regular inspection, as does the line body.

The braid also offers a maximum of sensitivity thanks to its low elasticity and will allow to better transcribe our animations to the lure, even if this one is far and deep. It is the same for the subtle touches which, even if they intervene when the lure evolves far, can be felt and sanctioned by an effective strike.

My basic braid is a PE 0.8 (16.5/100 for about 16 lbs of tensile strength) with a 6 or 8 lbs leader. Depending on the transparency of the water, or if you refine your technique with the more frequent use of a lure rather than another, you will adapt. For the use of small ripples, a PE 0.6 and a 5lbs fluoro are ideal. For the use of big swimming fish or big undulators, a PE 1 and a 10 lbs fluoro will not be superfluous.

The essential accessories

A landing net with a long handle is a real plus, especially when fishing from steep and scabrous banks. A good pair of walking shoes is a must in the maze of boulders that can be found in the reservoirs.
