Trout fishing: discover the reservoirs!

The opening of the trout season means that the rivers are going to be taken by storm by many salmonid lovers who can't wait to get started after 6 months of waiting. In addition to rivers, it's also possible to open in lakes, and why not in reservoirs?

The reservoirs offer long stretches of shoreline, fishing conditions that depend little on the weather and, above all, big fish! An ideal place for the opening.

Trout can be found in a relatively small number of biotopes. They need cool, oxygenated water and access to areas with currents to reproduce. Mountain rivers and certain spring-fed lowland streams are ideal for trout. Some lakes also have interesting characteristics, as in the case of some dam lakes, which have all three elements: fresh water, oxygen and access to at least one stream. Let's take a look at how to fish these lakes for salmonids with lures.

What is a reservoir?

A dam lake is an artificial lake. It is a structure that bars water is filled a natural basin, valley or gorge. They are used for irrigation, drinking water supply (after treatment) or power generation.

So there's bound to be at least one river flowing into the lake. The exception is hill reservoirs, which are dammed lakes that collect and feed on surface runoff and are not necessarily connected to a watercourse. The latter type of lake is often found on the plains (in the hills) and is used for agricultural irrigation. Salmonids are not found here, as the water is too warm and lacks oxygen.

Reservoirs are generally found in mountainous areas, at altitudes of at least 700m. They are located in areas of high relief, just like our trout... In our case, we often speak of high-altitude lakes in mountainous or hilly areas, which have nothing to envy in terms of landscape to certain natural lakes.

Special conditions for salmonids

The presence of a watercourse is essential for trout breeding. The stream serves as a breeding and spawning ground, and as a source of fresh, oxygenated water, even in summer.

Dam lakes also differ from other lakes in the wide range of variations in their water levels. The water in these lakes is used and exploited, and the level rises or falls according to water requirements and precipitation.

Banks thus cleared are ideal for prospecting. Steep banks should be explored with caution, as the perpetual rise and fall of the water "washes" the bank and destabilizes it. Care should also be taken to respect the prohibitions on fishing from the dam and other structures.

These lakes are home to many fish, but especially to large numbers of salmonids. The large volume of water and the almost systematic presence of fry (minnows, gudgeon, roach, etc.) give these trout rapid growth.

In the following article, we'll look at how to lure fish for these big trout.
