Which equipment for chub fishing with surface lures ?

This light and technical style of fishing requires the use of equipment that is just as technical. Here is a small listing of the equipment and accessories to take with you when you decide to go and survey the banks in search of chub.

One of the main characteristics of this approach is its sobriety. You will travel light and without the need to plan a half-day or more trip.

The choice of the material

As with Big Bait fishing for example, the equipment is not sized according to the species you are targeting but according to the size of the lures you are using.

Fishing for chub with insect imitations requires the use of very specific equipment, very light but with a good reserve of power allowing at the same time efficient and precise casts while ensuring the control of the first powerful rushes of chub which can reach sizes higher than 60 cm for the biggest specimens. The fight of a nice chub on Light equipment will give you a lot of pleasure!

The cane

In order to be able to cast lures of less than 5 g without difficulty, the use of a spinning set is highly recommended.

The choice of the rod will be made in priority on an Ultra Light model (UL), from 1,80 m to 2,20 m according to the fished biotopes and endowed with a sufficient reserve of power to counter the first rushes of the big chub that you can meet. The full tip of some models allows to propel easily and with precision the lightest lures.

The reel

Rods weighing more or less 100 g should be combined with reels weighing 160 to 200 g. A reel in size 1000 for rods up to 2 m and in size 2500 for rods from 2 m to 2.20 m. Moreover, prefer a high ratio for more efficiency.

The line

Even if the use of nylon is possible, I usually use braid because of its much smaller diameter than nylon for the same strength.

Also, it is necessary to give a particular importance to the characteristics of this one to be completely effective in action of fishing. A fine braid (PE 0.6 to 0.8) with a very regular round profile will limit friction, allowing you to gain in precision and reach greater casting distances.

The leader of line

Discretion is the key with chub! The use of fluorocarbon is very widespread for the implementation of fine fishing and this because of its increased discretion compared to the nylon with equal diameter.

Since most of the time the lure hits the surface, or only a few moments later, the use of fluorocarbon alone is quite feasible. For short casts close to a fish, make sure to keep your rod in a high position so as to limit the contact of the leader with the surface.

Nevertheless, since fluorocarbon has a higher density than nylon, I tend to use nylon as a leader when I want to let my lure evolve on long drifts, especially when I want to use the current to present a lure to fish under foliage for example. Nylon will sink more slowly than flurocarbon, offering a better presentation of the lure over time. In this case, a transparent 20/100 nylon will meet the majority of the fishing conditions encountered. The other alternative is to use a thinner fluorocarbon.

As for the length of the leader, I generally opt for a length of fluoro or nylon rod. For the connection between the braid and the leader, choose a knot that goes easily through the rings. I use the albright knot most of the time because of the ease of tying it at the water's edge.

Some important accessories

In addition, since this type of fishing is often done by sight, a cap combined with a good pair of polarized glasses will quickly prove to be indispensable.

Concerning the glasses, I advise amber glasses, allowing to adapt to the majority of the conditions of luminosity, even yellow, very luminous, for the blow of the evening.

Finally, this goes without saying but don't forget to take a landing net! A good way to secure your catches and to take nice pictures in the water during solo sessions!
