The thumb knot, quick, simple and strong for tying a swivel or lure

If there's one knot I have immense confidence in, despite its disconcerting ease, it's the thumb knot. In situations where you need to tie your lure quickly, even with large diameters of line, this is my preferred knot.

The thumb knot, whose principle is based on the nylon being trapped underneath itself, gives a great impression of reliability and solidity. This impression is well-founded, as famous fishing guides such as Julien Derozier have placed their trust in it.

Not only strong, this knot has the advantage of being quick and easy to make. Here's how:

Step 1

Pass the fluorocarbon or nylon through the eye of your hook, lure or swivel.

Step 2

Take your hook at the eye between your thumb and forefinger.

Step 3

Make a loop around your finger and the main thread.

Step 4

Repeat the operation 3 times.

Step 5

Slide the coils with your finger, making sure they don't overlap.

Step 6

Pass the free strand through the coils from bottom to top.

Step 7

Moisten and gradually tighten. The knot will gradually form and before it's fully tightened, slide it into the eye of your hook.

Step 8

Finish tightening your knot, trim the excess thread and your knot is now complete.
