The Orvis knot, ideal for small flies and small hooks

Orvis is a well-known brand in the world of fly fishing. The knot that bears its name is also ideal for tying on small flies and nymphs efficiently and discreetly.

Invented by Larry Becker during a contest organized by Orvis, the knot that bears his name is one of the best for discreetly tying on small flies, nymphs, and even eyed hooks for bait fishing.

It doesn't slip, is very quick to tie, and its small size doesn't interfere with your fly's movement.

For better visibility, this tutorial was created using 40/100 fluorescent nylon line and a size 1 hook.

Step 1

Thread the nylon through the eye of your fly or hook.

Step 2

Wrap the loose strand around the main strand once.

Step 3

Thread the loose end back through the loop you've just formed. Be careful to thread it in the correct direction (as shown in the photo).

Step 4

Thread the loose end back through the second loop that has formed.

Step 5

Go around again.

Step 6

Wet your knot and start tightening it.

Step 7

Continue tightening until the knot slides up against the eye of your hook.

Then cut off the excess, and your bow is done.

Benefits:

  • Very easy to make.
  • Doesn't slip.
  • Discreet.
  • Solid.
