Lure fishing by the sea in Corsica, fishing harbours well

Fishing ports

The seashores of the Isle of Beauty offer many possibilities. These include fishing in the harbours. These are ideal for stalking marine predators such as wolffish, barracuda and tassergal, which regularly hunt in these waters.

The first thing to consider is whether or not fishing is allowed in the desired harbor. In many marinas, fishing is tolerated, especially outside the summer season. In summer, it's best to use the dykes and harbor exits, and avoid fishing directly in the "intra muros" harbors. They are crowded, and there are a lot of people on the quays. It's easy to understand that fishing can be a real nuisance for other users in these situations.

The advantage of harbors is that they are suitable for year-round fishing, with the presence of sedentary predators such as wolffish, horse mackerel and barracuda.

Harbours, a privileged fishing area

Harbors are refuges for fish of all sizes. They range from atherins to juvenile fry to mullets. They not only find places to hide, but also food.

Predators have understood this, and they regularly hunt in ports.

Let's talk about predators! In Corsica, you'll find plenty of predatory fish capable of hunting in the harbours, from the smallest, like the redfish, to the biggest, like the friendly liche, which sometimes comes in to lay down the law!

When fishing in the harbours, you'll particularly want to target severeaux (yellowtail horse mackerel), wolffish, barracudas and tassergals... But surprises are commonplace in Corsica!

Several strategies are available to us for fishing in these port infrastructures.

Sight fishing

Visual prospecting is possible in ports.

In Corsica, the water in the harbours is clear and you can walk along the quays to try and spot a predator. Ideal for a short session after work or on vacation.

Lightly-weighted soft lures or elongated minnow-type swimming fish are relatively all-purpose. Fish imitations such as mullet are regularly effective. Overall, natural colors and realistic presentations are more effective in fooling these sighted fish.

This strategy is also valid at night with a good headlamp. During the day, polarized glasses can be used to locate coveted fish.

Fixed station fishing, port entrance

Many predators start hunting at night. A particularly successful strategy is to post up at harbor entrances in the evening (or morning), to intercept predators entering the harbor to hunt.

A fairly long rod (2.50 m) allows you to cast far and explore the area. Swimming fish are very effective for luring active fish on the prowl. This is particularly true for barracudas.

Prospecting between boats

You can also fish very well by prospecting in harbours. This is especially true at night when predators are on the prowl.

This type of fishing is very effective for light game fishing for horse mackerel. With an ultra-light or light rod, you'll be able to fish subtly for this combative little predator. Small shads or fine soft lures presented on micro lead heads are formidable.

In the same vein, but heavier, it's possible to fish for wolffish this way, at night in Corsican ports.

Care should be taken with the ropes and not to throw far and haphazardly.
