Selecting your equipment for sea bread fishing

Sea bread fishing is a very simple technique to set up. However, knowing how to equip yourself correctly will increase your chances of success and have fun when fighting with the fish.

The rod and reel set

When fishing with bread, the primary objective is to be able to propel a very light weight to a good distance. The goal is to bait with the crust of the bread and fish with a small ball of crumb.

To cast weights under 10 grams, you should choose a long rod, ideally over 2.40 meters, of the Ultralight type. The power range of your rod should ideally be between 5 and 14 grams, in order to be able to cast correctly while having enough power reserve for the fight. Some fish such as mullet and bream are hardened fighters who will not hesitate to make your task difficult.

Equip this rod with a light reel, size 1500 to 2500 to have a good line reserve and a consistent drag.

Braid and leader for bread fishing

Bread fishing is practiced with light baits, in sometimes crowded areas. To guarantee good casting distances, braid is mandatory. A braid diameter between 8 and 12 hundredths will be both fine enough to cast far, while being strong enough during the fight. It allows you to gain several meters on a cast, but must be finished with a discretionary leader. Ideally, choose fluorocarbon which tends to sink and is very resistant to abrasion.

If you are fishing on rocky shores or near boats, fish often try to rub against ropes, rocks or even boat hulls to cut the line and free themselves. These are very aggressive fish that you can't always stop in their tracks, which is why it's important to have an anti-abrasion leader.

Your leader should be of a good length for discretion, about 4 meters, and of a discrete but solid diameter. The diameter of the leader depends mainly on the spot and the clarity of the water, but you can choose between 20 and 26 hundredths depending on the conditions.

The choice of the hook

To complete your bread fishing equipment, you will have to choose the right hook. The importance of the hook is vital since it will decide the type of species you are looking for. We have two options, the treble hook and the single hook. The triple hook is mainly used to catch all species on the spot, whether it is sauper, mullet or bream. On the other hand, the treble is not very discreet and can easily scare off wary fish. For sparids, the triple tends to be crushed by their powerful jaws and to unhook more fish.

As for the single hook, it has a harder time biting small-mouthed fish like saupe and mullet, but it rarely stalls when it's hooked correctly. The single is also more discreet and allows for smaller crumb balls. The ideal size for a treble is usually 10 or 12, while for the single hook, any size can be used, depending on the size of the fish you are after.
