3 fun techniques to practice in the Mediterranean at the start of summer

The summer months are approaching, and temperatures are rising as fast as fish activity. In the Mediterranean, several techniques are particularly effective at this time of year.

Surface lures and sharp-toothed fish

June is undoubtedly the best month of the year to go in search of tassergals and barracudas on surface lures. At this time of year, the surface layer is very warm and the bottom layer very cold. These water layers are separated by the thermocline, often located in the first 3 meters below the surface. The warm water layer is the preferred zone for large fish to hunt on the surface.

Near mouths and harbour exits, predators are on the prowl for easy prey. This allows us to use poppers or stickbaits to imitate a prey in distress and produce some very fine fishing. Be sure to use sturdy tackle, however, as amberjacks and liches can also join the party.

Rocky coast fishing and diversity

In the same way as for large predators, on rocky shores, sars, oblades and wolffish gather close to the edges. The use of small swimming fish, soft lures or surface lures allows us to catch a multitude of different species. Most of the fishing is done from the shore, with your feet in the crystal-clear Mediterranean. The bites are violent and the fights very interesting on light tackle.

It's also a very visual fishery as many fish can be seen following and attacking. The rocky beaches are unfortunately often occupied by bathers, but patience will be required, as the fish will flock there at dusk to feed.

Bread fishing and big fights

A technique that can be practised with the family or alone, bread fishing in June is particularly fun. Mullet, sauper and bream begin to feed actively on bread thrown by summer visitors. All you need is a nice baguette to catch a large number of fish in a very short time. Choose days with little wind, as the bread tends to drift quickly out of your casting range.

It's a highly visual technique that allows children in particular to discover fishing by observing the different fish that can be found on our coasts. The best fishing spots are undoubtedly the outer dykes of harbours, as these are very popular passageways for fish. However, beware of the sun, which can be very aggressive at this time of year, so a cap and sunglasses will be your best friends.
