Fishing for mullet with bread requires to know its behavior and how to target it quickly. A fishing technique with a lot of finesse and appropriate rigs for intense fights.

The mullet family is composed of several species, notably the lippu mullet and the hog mullet that are found in large quantities. Our coasts are very favorable to the presence of mullet, especially in the port areas.

Mule behavior

The mullet is a fish mainly herbivorous, but also feeds on small invertebrates. It is generally found in shallow areas, digging in the substrate or under the hulls of boats.

Mullet live in schools, the number of individuals of which depends on the average size. The big fishes generally move by 10 maximum, while the small ones sometimes form schools of hundreds of individuals. It is a shy fish that tends to flee when it detects a human presence.

When fishing for bread, since mullet have no teeth, they can be found sucking on our bait to try to get small pieces off. They tend to stay close to the surface and rarely go below the bait.

Targeting mullet

To target mullet when bread fishing, we will have to use trickery. We know that mullet tend to be shy and stay close to the surface. It is the only fish that we can target, with good results, using a piece of floating bread. It is necessary to visually confirm the presence of mullet on the bait before fishing.

If you fight another fish, the mullets may run away and not come back for many minutes. Be patient, prepare a small piece of bread crust on which you will prick a small treble hook. The mullet will not come to swallow your bait but will push it and try to break off pieces of it. The hooking should not be done at the touch, but you should wait for the fish to bite itself.

Some tips for fishing mullet with bread

To avoid spooking mullet, prefer long distance baiting, a few meters before the limit of your casting distance. Mullet have a good sight and it is therefore necessary to fish fine. Nylon, floating, is to be preferred to fluorocarbon which is sinking. Our piece of bread must not sink, nor our line, to avoid that the mullet perceives it and is reluctant to bite.

The mouth of the mullet is very wide, but its opening is small, even in large individuals. If you want to have a chance to bite them, you will need to use very small treble hooks, ideally size 16 to 12. Make sure that the points of your hook stick out of the bread while camouflaging it as much as possible.

Mullet are very good fighters and tend to target obstacles to get out of your grip. Choose a spot that is relatively far from ropes, pontoons or large rocks to avoid a fish rubbing against them.
