Protect your lower body to continue fishing with your feet in the water in winter

Fishing comfortably with your feet in the water during the winter is possible. To do so, you must respect a few rules and choose the right layers of clothing.

The legs

Generally, 2 layers are more than enough because the thighs are less sensitive to cold than the upper body. They are also likely to move, especially if you are float-tubing or wading, which warms them up. The first layer is a thermal undergarment. The second layer, which will also act as an outer layer, is the waders. Here, two choices are possible, with Neoprene waders or Gore-tex waders. The latter will perform better. Gore-tex waders are more flexible, so with the extra layer of clothing they remain comfortable. Secondly, the thermal insulation and breathability that Gore-tex offers is second to none.

The feet

When you fish continuously with your feet in cold water, they are often the ones who will push the fisherman to end his fishing trip. Well protected, it is quite possible to stay several hours comfortably in water at only 1 or 2 °C. For this, I recommend a pair of classic cotton socks as the first layer. The second layer is a pair of thermal socks and the third layer is Neoprene waders. I hadn't mentioned it yet, but if you want to stay in the water for a minimum of time, it's better to use waders with Neoprene socks, as waders with integrated plastic boots don't offer good insulation.

Good socks are essential for winter fishing.

Thus clothed, sessions of 4 to 5 hours are easily feasible. Beyond that, chemical heaters are a very good complement. It is important to put them on at the beginning of the session, not to wait until you are cold, and they will allow you to last longer.

I hope these tips will help you prepare properly and allow you to fish through the coming winter.
