The 3 layer system
For good protection against the cold, the "3-layer principle" is often the one that provides the best performance. The goal is to stay dry and maintain a comfortable temperature. This means that the system must be waterproof, warm and breathable to allow the thermal regulation phenomena to work and to allow the evacuation of perspiration.
Role of the 3 layers:
- Layer 1: Transfer perspiration from the skin to the other layers.
- Layer 2: Thermal insulation, bringing heat.
- Layer 3: Protection against elements (rain, wind, snow,âeuros¦).
The head
A woolen cap and a neck warmer that goes up to the nose are the basics. A jacket with a windproof hood is necessary to protect you from the rain and wind, depending on the conditions.
The upper body
The first layer to be worn next to the body must be well chosen, as it must transfer perspiration to remain comfortable throughout the day. For this first layer, a cotton t-shirt is not recommended (it retains moisture) and you must take a garment designed for this purpose, such as long-sleeved thermal underwear. Then, a good polyester fleece is what brings warmth to the system. Finally, a waterproof jacket, such as a windbreaker, insulates the system from the elements. This last layer must also be of good quality to remain effective for several hours.

The hands
Hands are certainly the most complicated part of the body to protect effectively, while keeping a certain dexterity for fishing. I had found a pair of gloves designed for use with cell phones.

The interest is not to be able to use my phone, but at the level of the index finger the fabric is less thick and tactile which gives a good feeling with the reel crank or the blank of the rod. A fabric underglove, even very thin, offers an interesting layer if it is very cold.
