Return of session / Winter float-tube trip in search of walleye in Canadian rivers

Walleye and Pike

At the end of last November, I took advantage of the last few days before the rivers ice-up to take out my float-tube one last time and go fishing for walleye, a close cousin of the pike-perch.

Walleye

Walleye is a fish very similar to the pike-perch. There are two subspecies, the most popular being the walleye, also known as the walleye, which reaches slightly smaller sizes than the European pike-perch. The second species is the walleye, which is rarer and remains small.

The outside temperature is around 0°C and the surface water temperature is 2.5°C. I therefore favour the search for walleye which, like pikeperch, is active in very cold weather. As for me, I fish "à l'Européenne", which means that I fish for walleye as I fish for pikeperch in Europe, that is to say, alternating between vertical and linear. At this level, there is nothing special.

The echo sounder is a great help to me and it allows me to detect groupings of large white fish. I notice 2 very distinct zones of white fish concentration. The first one with a large aggregation of river beards in a zone of about 8 meters deep. River catfish have a varied diet. It feeds on insects, molluscs, seeds or small fish. It is therefore possible to catch them with lures but my objective is not there.

A second zone with carps that stand within 5 meters. Through the carps I sometimes make some walleyes so I'm only prospecting zones from 4 to 5 meters deep. The carps invited themselves to the game, lures in 5 and 6 inches don't scare them.

The gilded ones, seemed to be in continuous or solitary movement. You had to beat a lot of ground to make one or two in a row and so on.

In the end, the fishing is much more varied than I thought. Even if I don't have the big walleye I had hoped for, I added to my counter a new species which is the brill and saw a nice variety of fish species. Walleye fishing closes at the end of March, I still have to hope for a thaw before that date to go back and look for a few!
