Not to be confused with the pageot

Pagfish are too often confused with the common pageot (Paggelus erythrinus). Two species that can frequent the same spots. To differentiate between the two species, all you need to do is look closely at the caudal fin. The paddlefish's caudal fin is speckled with white spots, unlike that of the common paddlefish.

Pagre reproduction

Pagfish are hermaphroditic. It is first female during its first years, then becomes male as soon as its size approaches 25 centimetres. Spawning takes place in spring, between April and June, depending on temperatures.

Where to find pagres?

Pagre can be found in both shallow and deep water. They are generally found in depths ranging from a few meters to over 200 meters. Juveniles are more likely to be found close to the shore, while adults are more likely to be found at deeper depths. It is usually a solitary fish that lives on rocky or sandy bottoms. It likes drop-offs.

A carnivorous fish

Armed with a powerful jaw, the Pagre feeds mainly on crustaceans, shellfish and cephalopods. Shrimps, crabs, mussels, marine worms or squid, the pagre feeds on the bottom. With a mouth that is rather small for its size, it is particularly keen on small prey. It can also feed on small fish.

Pagre fishing

Vertical fishing for pike-perch

Bait fishing for pike remains the most prolific technique, although it is possible to seek out pike with soft lures or jigs. Vertical fishing techniques using tenya or madai provide the perfect combination for luring pike. If you hope to hook pike, you'll need to be very careful with your rigs. Pike-perch are wary fish, so discretion is essential. Most of the time, you'll need to work slowly. Once you've hooked them, you'll be able to put up a good fight with marked rushes.
