Hamstring knot: a very sturdy solution for attaching a hamstring to nylon

© Thierry Cendrier

To tie a paddle or eye hook, this is the strongest and most reliable knot, but it also takes some time to master...

Step 1

This knot can be made with either a paddle or an eye hook. In the latter case, thread the line through the eyelet so that it protrudes from the front of the hook.

Step 2

Form a large loop with the free strand, holding it between your thumb and forefinger at the eyelet.

Step 3

Make a half turn with the loop.

Step 4

Take the shank of the hook and the free strand with the loop and twist around the hook. Pay attention to the direction of rotation - only one works, and you'll soon realize it!

Step 5

Carry out this operation 7 to 10 times, making sure to turn the loop every time!

To keep your knot clean and easier to tighten, make sure that your turns are tight and well joined.

Step 6

Moisten the knot with saliva and, with your free hand, tighten the knot by pulling on the wire on the eye side of the hook.

Step 7

Continue to pull on the wire until the loop is completely resorbed.

Step 8

You can then finish tightening your knot by pulling on the free strand and ensuring that the knot slides all the way to the hook eye or paddle.

Step 9

Trim off any excess line and, if using a paddle hook, make sure that the line passes right in front of the paddle!

If your knot comes undone every time you tighten it, you've probably tied it the wrong way round... Try it the other way round!

Advantage

  • The strongest of all knots

Disadvantages

  • Takes some time to learn
  • Not easy to make with small hooks
