What are the best baits for saupe fishing?

The best baits for saupe, a common Mediterranean fish, are mainly of plant origin, as saupe is primarily herbivorous, although it can sometimes accept animal baits too.

The saupe (Sarpa salpa) is a marine fish of the Sparidae family, common in the Mediterranean. It is one of the few herbivorous fish in this sea, feeding mainly on algae.

Effective natural baits

Bread (crumb shaped into a light ball): the most widely used and effective bait, attracting sauce quickly. It can be baited and fished with a float, rod or light cast. The bread ball must be light and well shaped to hold on the hook.

Baiting paste (same base as bread)âeuros¯: often mixed with seaweed powder or additives to increase attractiveness and hook hold.

Stringy green algae: kelp, ulva or fine aquatic algae such as rissoelle (red seaweed), mimicking the natural diet of saupe. Paste and seaweed are often mixed for better hold and attractiveness.

Rissoelle (Rissoella verruculosa): a ribboned seaweed with a rubbery consistency, highly prized for summer saupe fishing in the Mediterranean.

Animal baits (small proportion)

âeuros¯Saupe can accept marine worms, sardines or shrimps. These baits, however, are generally less present than bread or seaweed, except in the event of a shortage or on certain specific spots.

A few tips for good saupe fishing

It's best to use light, unobtrusive rigs. Floats weighing 4 to 5 g, a fine leader in 18 to 26/100, long shank straight hooks or small trebles (size 8 to 16), adapted to the fish's small mouth and sharp teeth.

Fish by sight, close to rocks, seagrass beds and in agitated areas where saups are active.

Baiting with bread or dough encourages concentration and increased bite.

Beware of brittle leaders due to sharp teeth; use of sturdy fluorocarbon is recommended.

Please note

The consumption of saupe is sometimes not recommended due to the risk of intoxication (ictiotoxism), particularly from certain types of seaweed; care must be taken to prepare the fish properly.
