This Abu Garcia kit comes in a compact case. Yet when you open it, you discover a lot. The kit comprises :
- a 6.6p (1.98 m) 4-piece spinning rod with 3-12 g of power
- abu Garcia reel with nylon lining
- a multifunction tool (10 tools)
- paracord bracelet with compass and whistle
- a friction fire starter
- a box of lures and accessories (spoons, swimming fish, staples, float, single hooks)
- a user manual
At the water's edge (in the rain)
Set-up is very quick, as the reel is already attached to the rod and filled with nylon. All I have to do is fit the components together and pass the line through the rings. The manual supplied is very detailed, and anyone who has never fished before will be able to get the hang of it by following the instructions.
I'm not going to go so far as digging for an earthworm and instead turn to the easy way out: lures. This kit contains 3 lures: 2 spinners and a 5 cm floating fish.
I start with the latter, but the windy weather and the width of the river call for a denser lure. So I change this little swimmer fish for a spoon. The rod is well suited to this type of fishing. With its medium action, it's a pleasure to use with this vibrant lure. The reel surprises me with its fluidity and the drag is very progressive.
No unpleasant surprises at the touchdown or during fights with overcrowded trout that put up a good fight.
I didn't go so far as to eat my catch, but thanks to its multifunctional tool, this kit also lets you kill and prepare your fish. The included fire starter can even be used to cook fish.
Opinions
Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the products in this kit. We're clearly not talking about single-use products, but products that can accompany the angler for a long time to come.
Because of its length, this rod is better suited to lure fishing than to bait fishing. Its power makes it ideal for fishing small to medium-sized rivers and lakes for small predators such as perch, trout and chub.
This kit is perfect for introducing an adventurous teenager to fishing. He'll have in his hands very correct equipment that will help him discover fishing in good conditions. He'll find plenty to keep him busy and have fun with the accessories. And if his passion wins him over, he'll already have the basic equipment. He'll just need to add a few new lures.
