Rodbuilding, a little lexicon for the beginner rodbuilder

© Thierry Cendrier

Anglicisms, technical terms, it is not always easy to master the specific vocabulary of rodbuilding. Here is some information for beginners on the main terms used.

After reading this vocabulary, you will now be a bilingual angler/rodbuilder. You will notice that there are still many other specific terms, but you are now well equipped to follow a rodbuilding discussion, watch a tutorial or read a specialized article!

The blank (the rod)

  • Blank carbon rod : carbon rod which is the main element of your rod. It is on this rod that the rings will be tied, and the reel seat and grips will be glued
  • Action : curve made by your blank when it is put under pressure. We speak about action fast, moderate fast, moderate...
  • Thorn also called "natural working direction", this is the direction in which the blank will work each time it is put under pressure. It is therefore necessary to bind the rings along the spine of the blank.
  • Hm and Im high modulus and intermediate modulus. It is the quality of the carbon that makes up the blank.
  • Resonance the ability of a blank to transmit information relative to the contact of the lure on the bottom and to hits. We speak about transmissions of the "shocks".
  • Sensitivity the blank's ability to transmit what is happening at the end of the line, especially the sensations linked to the lure's swimming. We speak about transmission of the vibrations.

The accessories

  • Reamer cylindrical tool covered with sanding paper to bore the reel seat and grips to the right diameter
  • Grip they are made of Eva, cork, carbon, wood... and are used to hold the rod. They are located at the reel seat and butt
  • Fore grip part of the handle located above the reel seat
  • Rear grip part of the handle located below the reel seat
  • Shim a hard foam tube that is glued into a reel seat to reduce the internal diameter so that it can be perfectly adjusted to the cross section of the blank.
  • Full grip : mounting of a grip covering the entire heel
  • Split grip two-part grip (butt and reel seat) with part of the blank visible at the heel
  • Butt part of the blank with the widest section, i.e. the heel
  • Tip part of the tip with the thinnest section, thus the scion

The rings

  • Chocker the first ring, the largest one, the one closest to the reel
  • Special (cification): this is the spacing between the rings
  • Brazilian assembly on casting rods, normally all the rings are positioned on the top of the blank. In a Brazilian (or spiral) setup, the first ring is on the top, the second at 60 degrees, the third at 120 degrees and finally the rest of the rings under the blank (like a spinning rod). The interest is that, on strong bending, the braid does not come in contact with the blank. And this gives an inimitable look to his rod!
  • Tunnel : set of small rings that are mounted on a cane
  • Kr concept method of distribution of the rings consisting in reducing the cone of flight of the wire on 3 rings and then to guide it on a tunnel of "many" small rings all of the same size
  • Ligature technique of wrapping wire around a ring to attach it to the blank
  • Trim band wrap : different ligation techniques for aesthetic purposes only
  • Dryer : support equipped with a motor used for the varnishing of the rings
