Equipment for deep longline fishing

When longline fishing at depths of over 100 metres, it's important to adapt your tackle to the fish you're targeting. It is possible to catch both large and small fish on the same rigs.

When you're deep-sea fishing, you often come across a large number of small fish that are little affected by fishing pressure. Their large numbers make it possible to have fun with fine tackle all year round. Ideally, the rods we use should be able to support 100 to 150g, as drift and current may force us to use heavier sinkers to maintain verticality with the rig.

In terms of reel, don't hesitate to choose a solid one, as ascents of over 100 metres with 2 or 3 fish on the line can quickly damage the equipment. You'll also need a good capacity, around 250 meters of 12-centimeter braid. The ideal size is a 4000 reel, both comfortable and powerful enough to withstand the stresses of this type of fishing.

In certain areas and at certain times of the year, deep-sea fish can reach significant sizes and weights. It is therefore essential to always have powerful equipment at hand so as not to be caught off guard when the big fish are biting. I strongly advise you to use casting gear, which can more easily winch large weights over such high water.

It's also a question of comfort, as heavy weights are tiring when spinning. Choose a casting reel designed for the sea, in size 300, very solid and with a very large line capacity. Fitted with 16 or 18 hundredths braid, this type of reel will give you the best chances of reeling in the fish. As for the rod, 30 lb is ideal, as fish such as conger eel and pike-perch are very powerful fighters. This rod will also enable you to quickly lift fish off the bottom, which they will try to scrape to break your line and free themselves.

Your rigs, whether designed to target small or large fish, must be very strong. It's better to reduce the number of hits on small fish, which is already very high, than to lose a big fish because of a fragile rig. Don't hesitate to use large line diameters: at this depth, most of the light doesn't reach the fish. Beyond 150 meters, darkness sets in and a fish can't really tell the difference between a 30 and a 60 hundredth.
