Sar fishing in the Mediterranean: winter is a good season for success

Winter is a very good season to look for sars on the Mediterranean coast and an opportunity to catch some fine specimens. Various techniques can be applied to lure less wary sars.

Winter Sar fishing

Winter is not an easy or pleasant season for anglers, but it's a great time to look for sars. Black-headed sars or veirades, pointed-snout sars or bécofino, even drum sars, the different species of sars remain very present during the winter season. These fish like cold waters and become active as soon as the sea rises and forms. This is the right time to fish for sars using a variety of fishing techniques.

Bait fishing for sar

Whether surfcasting or landing, a simple, unobtrusive rig fished with a bibi, American worm, sea cucumber or strip of squid will give good results day or night.

Fishing with a cork can also be effective for presenting a live shrimp or crab as naturally as possible. For the more seasoned angler, the technique of toc fishing allows you to gain in discretion and feel the slightest touches, which can be discreet even for large subjects.

Another bait that can be used at this time of year to select sars is a piece of hard or soft cheese, which is an absolute must.

Lure fishing for sar

Sars can still be fished with lures at this time of year. Choose small, hard, bibbed lures for use on rocky shallows when the sea is just forming and the foam is beginning to cover the surface of the water.

Lure and bait combinations such as tenya or madaï can also be used to fish for sars vertically from a boat or kayak. These two techniques are more difficult to set up from shore, but can be effective depending on the fishing spot you're looking for. To avoid untimely hook-ups, it's best to fish in shallow waters and, if possible, overhang the spot.

Fishing from sar to dough

Winter is one of the best seasons for doughfish. Of course it is, pelota fishing (a dough made from flour or semolina and crushed sardines) is a key technique for fishing in the foam.

Other types of dough can be used, such as dough made with different cheeses, or simple bread dough.

Paste fishing can be done with a cork or a toc, or even with a jig if you can get the paste to hold properly on the hook.
