The wolfish is surely one of the most emblematic fish of the Mediterranean. It is often fished with hard lures, but soft lures allow a more discreet approach and just as effective.

Choose a suitable area

Fishing for wolffish from the shore is not an easy thing to do. To obtain convincing results, you may have to spend a lot of time at the water's edge. However, some favorable areas are easily identifiable and will allow you to save time. Often fished with hard lures, beaches and river mouths are classic spots, soft lures are very effective there.

On rocky coasts, it is sometimes necessary to wait for the sea to be agitated for the wolves to get closer to the shore and the nature of the bottom increases the chances of hooking our lures. A good compromise between the rocky coast and the sandy areas are the dikes, often located at the entrances of ports, they form a passage area where wolffish love to hunt small fish.

To imitate is to win

When fishing for wolffish with soft lures, it is important to remember that the goal is to be as close as possible to what the fish are eating when choosing your lure. The size should be as close as possible to the potential prey of wolffish and the color should be in agreement as well. Natural colors dedicated to the sea such as white, gray and blue are a must.

The frequency of vibration of the shad's tail should be high, meaning the caudal should vibrate as fast as possible, just as small panicked fish do. The objective is not to move large bodies of water, but rather to match the prey of the wolves. Moreover, the waters are often very clear in the Mediterranean, hence the importance of choosing lures that imitate the prey present.

Some useful tips

For those who would like to try this technique, I advise you to start with night fishing, if possible under street lights, to see and analyze the behavior of the fish. It is not uncommon to find that a fast animation works better than a slow one, or vice versa. Forage fish often gather in the light, surrounded by predators lurking in the shadows.

The wolfish is a fish that has no real teeth, however, the gills on these gills are very sharp and can easily cut your fingers. It is therefore advisable to be careful that the line does not rub on it, risking to be weakened and make you lose the next fish.
