Fishing with a big rod or the pleasure of fishing for white fish

A fun technique that works © Pauline Bellicourt

Fishing with a big rod is a very playful technique that brings good results on white fish. Let's see together the equipment to use and the fishing action to master this so particular fishing.

Many anglers have made their first catch with roach. With a telescopic rod or a bamboo stick, a maggot, bread crumbs, or a seed. Everyone surely still remembers those childhood moments. But fishing with a rod, it is also a rod with a handle, also called big rod. Designed to catch white fish, it was later developed to track carp.

A technique that has been lost among young people, yet it is surely the one that will give you the most hits. More fun than the telescopic rod, the rod with a grip also allows you to fish further. More sporty and more technical, this practice also requires a little more equipment. A different kind of pleasure that allows you to make a lot of fish. A gesture that requires precision, the fluidity of gestures comes with time and hours of practice.

Taking care of the installation

Before you begin, set up your station, pontoon or crate properly. You will be sitting there for some time and it is important to be upright and stable. This will certainly make you more comfortable on the one hand. But on the other hand, it will prevent you from hurting your back.

You can prepare your primer, before you prepare the rest of your material. This will allow the groundbait to swell and work within its particles. The groundbait, called "the tub" by competitive anglers, requires care in its preparation.

Some people will prepare their bait with a recipe of their choice. That is, they will select and combine the components of their choice. But the ready-made packages in stores are just as good. Do not hesitate to mix several types of bait. For example, a package of roach, a package of pond and a package of bream. The goal is to have several different kinds of particles. Particles and textures that will make your groundbait work on several layers of water. Don't neglect the earth, topsoil and river soil. These will bring either heaviness to the groundbait, to make it tackle. Or a smoky aspect, to make your groundbait cloudy.

Once you have wetted your groundbait properly, strain it through a sieve. It is essential to air it. Before putting the balls, you can add some baits, pinkies, caster, âeuros¦ according to the seasons and fishes you are looking for.

Cane strands are fragile, so be careful not to drop or snap them. Take the time to survey your spot properly and meticulously. The area you are going to fish should be flat and clean. It's a good idea to have at least two different riser lines, with two different float weights.

The probe should be clean. Take the time to pass the probe as many times as necessary. It is called "dragging" when there is only a few millimeters of clearance between the antenna and the float body. We talk about â??dragging the ball, keelâ?¦ when the probe is on the ground, your float is coming out of the float body or more.

It's time to get started!

Several strategies are used, throwing the balls by hand or putting them in the cup and why not make a mixture of both.

Throwing the balls accurately is something to work on. It is better to put everything in the cup properly, rather than putting the balls in the hand and putting them everywhere. Once you throw, it's too late! It's better to have the starter closer than too far away!

Let's hear the sound of the roller turning, the cane sliding between the hands. The gestures must be fluid. And here again, we can say that fishing is a sport! The arms and shoulders must be trained to face all situations: the back and forth of the rod, as well as the rhythm of the bites, as the cups to be put back during fishing.

Gestures should be clean, and always the same. It's important to have the same set-up every time, so you can develop habits that will save you time and confidence. Know that the automatisms will come as you spend time fishing and practicing. If everything is set up properly, you will no doubt make some nice fish!

After the souvenir photo, don't delay in putting the fish back in the water, delicately. Remember to pass on your passion and bring your children to the water, just as your parents or grandparents may have done with you.
