For several years now, Daiwa's Saltiga range has been the talk of the town. After the great success of the previous generation, the new range is already a must-have for strong fishing.

A complete range

The Saltiga range includes six new models with different powers and lengths to suit a multitude of different techniques. These rods are all designed for strong fishing, mainly on the surface for large predators on the French and exotic coasts.

The lightest model is a PE3 rod, equivalent to 50 lb, rising to PE8 rods and 100 lb of power. Of course, there's also a PE4, PE5 and PE6 so you can choose the one best suited to your fishing technique and the size of fish you're targeting. Saltiga rods are rather long, as they are designed to obtain very good casting distances, from 2m39 to 2m57.

Fishing opportunities

As for the fish and techniques that can be practised with this range, each model will be adapted to a particular size of fish. The Saltiga PE3 is perfect for popper and stickbait fishing for predatory Mediterranean fish such as amberjack, cuttlefish and barracuda. It's undoubtedly my favourite of the range, as its action is extremely precise for lure animation and it weighs just 231 grams!

The PE4 and PE5 are designed for bluefin tuna fishing with surface lures or casting jigs, for fish up to 60 kilos. The PE6 is where the real action begins: this 80-lb rod is ideal for big bluefin tuna or simply for exotic fishing for smaller fish. Finally, the PE8 version, for 100 lb, available in two different lengths, is ideally suited to fishing for trevally and other large exotic fish in the Indian Ocean and West Africa.

Technologies and price range

The Saltiga range benefits from Daiwa's latest developments in carbon and take-up technology to offer perfect actions in fighting and casting. The take-up is always positioned in Offset, which means that the two parts fit together at the top of the rod butt. This makes for a two-section rod, while perfectly preserving the properties of the blank when under stress.

Sic Titanium rings provide ideal braid glide while offering a lightness that can be felt after hours of casting. The reel seat is fitted with an additional clamping ring, very practical for holding the reel in place when the heel is working during a fight. The Saltiga range has a recommended retail price starting at 569 euros, which is still quite affordable for the quality and attention paid to their manufacture.
