Denti fishing in the Mediterranean, when, where and how?

Denti fishing by boat or kayak is practiced in the Mediterranean, preferably at sunrise and sunset, on rocky areas between 15 and 60 m depending on the season. It's a technical fishery that requires you to choose the right time of year, the right spots and the right combination of livebaits and lures.

When to fish it?

The denti remains peachable all year round, but its displacements change with water temperature.âeuros

Spring (April-June): it rises very close to the coasts to spawn, in little water, and it is recommended to avoid targeting it at this time to let it reproduce.âeuros

Ãté: it follows the forage banks and is often found between 10 and 40 m.âeuros

Autumn: the most interesting period, with fish descending to between 40 and 60 m to build up their reserves.âeuros

Winter: it stays deeper, often between 50 and more than 80 m, with a peak of activity during the warmest hours.âeuros

Where to look for denti?

The denti prefers structured bottoms: rock heads, dry bottoms, drop-offs, rocky plateaus with breaks and mixed rock-sand areas.âeuros

In summer, target the plateaus and rocky edges between 15 and 40 m where forage fish concentrate.âeuros

In autumn-winter, look for deeper breaks, marked reliefs and depressions from 40 to 80 m and more.âeuros

The combined use of GPS and depth sounder is almost indispensable for spotting different landforms, forage balls and the echoes of large fish.âeuros

How do you catch it?

By boat or kayak, denti can be caught on the move (squid, cuttlefish, small fish) or with lures, in slow or vertical drags.âeuros

Slow live trolling is very effective in summer in shallow water, at about 1 knot, following the "strike zones".âeuros

Vertical fishing is most often practised in winter and on deep and precise spots, with livebaits, jigs, madaï/tenya or simply large soft lures close to the bottom.âeuros

Denti can also be fished by casting soft lures: drifting on rock heads from 20-40 m, letting the lure work close to the bottom.âeuros

Equipment and discretion

The denti is powerful but meticulous, so you need a rod weighing around 20-50 lb, a reel with a serious brake and a sturdy leader, but as discreet as possible.âeuros

The good diameter fluorocarbon leader will be adjusted according to the structure to limit breakage in rocks.âeuros

Mounts must be clean, weights adapted to the drift, and drifts controlled to stay on the right layer of water.âeuros

Discretion is essential when searching for the denti by boat, quiet approaches, quiet drifts rather than repeated motor passages.âeuros

Ethics and safety

The denti breeds from April to June, even if no-kill catches can be tolerated, it is advisable not to look for it during this period.âeuros

If you have to return the fish to the water, avoid great depths to limit barotrauma, reel in the fish without haste and limit time out of the water.âeuros

Last but not least, checking the weather, adapting your boat and kayak to the open sea and wearing safety equipment are all essential for this type of sea fishing.
