Winter fishing in the Mediterranean, adapting to winter conditions

Winter fishing in the Mediterranean requires adaptation. To get results, you need to use the right techniques. Winter is also an opportunity to target other species and leave some alone.

Adapting to conditions

In winter, it's best to fish in sunny weather if you're fishing from shore, or in deeper water if you're fishing from a boat. Techniques such as pelota fishing , tenya fishing or shore-jigging will give good results. If you're fishing with surfcasting, you'll want to focus on sea breezes, which will provide food for fish looking for easy prey. And if there's one technique that works all year round and takes little time to enjoy, it's rockfishing.

Even though mild temperatures can make themselves felt on the shores of the Mediterranean in the middle of winter, it's sometimes necessary to protect yourself effectively from the cold. Northern gales can be great for fishing, but they also bring a bitter cold. Dressing in windproof clothing and providing adequate protection for the extremities of the body will enable you to enjoy a fishing session in a very cold wind.

For eging enthusiasts

Winter is the perfect time of year for fans of squid fishing . From the shore or by boat, white squid can be found close to the coast as soon as the sun goes down and until daybreak. So it's time to get out your jigs or calamarettes and look for these cephalopods.

Bichi-bachi, linear, vertical or trolling, squid are an easy and common catch in the middle of winter. You can also search for them with a cage and a sardine. Some nice cuttlefish or octopus may also grab your lures or baits.

Respecting the wolf's spawning season

The wolfish is one of the most sought-after fish on the Mediterranean, whether fished with lures or surfcasting. Winter is synonymous with wolfish reproduction.

Reproduction generally runs from late November to February, depending on the year and the biotope. It is therefore essential to leave them alone during this period to ensure better fishing in the future.
