I have tested... / Ima Popkey 120, a stickbait with a fast, messy swim

The Popkey 120 stands out for its ability to simulate prey in distress with a disordered, fast swimming action, unlike conventional stickbaits. A must-have for anglers looking for fast bites, especially for bass, perch, asp and more worldwide.

Popkey 120

Even though the Popkey 120 looks like a popper, and its name implies it, don't be fooled - it's not!

Le Popkey 120 n'est pas un popper !
The Popkey 120 is not a popper!

Its nose is tapered but not concave, so it doesn't make the characteristic popper noise. This is a floating stickbait that swims like a walking dog on the surface of the water.

When animated, it performs a very pronounced zig-zag walking the dog action, thanks to its pointed snout which makes it change direction rapidly. When animated with the rod down, this snout also causes the lure to dip or rise at random, resulting in a disordered swimming action.

When stopped, the lure doesn't stay horizontal but vertical. It is therefore impossible to make it take breaks, as it is a lure to be handled continuously, rather energetically.

The Popkey 120 is fairly light for its size, weighing just 16 grams for 12 centimetres, which means it casts well, but nothing more. It's a lure with which you'll prefer to look for precision along edges or near obstacles, rather than for distance records.

In terms of construction, there are no nasty surprises with Ima: the lure is solid, as are the treble hooks and broken rings. It can catch fish up to ten kilograms, while keeping the original hooks.

Triple hooks can be replaced by single hooks, without altering the swimming action, in size 1 or 1/0, depending on the species.

Use

In France, its shape and size are perfect for sea bass, but it can also be used for perch and asp.

Abroad, it's ideal for fishing fish up to ten kilograms, which respond well to fast, uncoordinated action, such as peacock bass and barracuda.

My opinion

The Popkey 120, with its very fast, messy swim, is a good complement to other classic stickbaits, with their round nose and slow, predictable swim, because the Popkey 120 does just the opposite!

It's a bit confusing to use at first, but once you've mastered it, it really comes into its own, offering an alternative to conventional stickbaits.

In other words, on the day when no stickbait seems to be working or you see fish rising without attacking, give it a try!

It doesn't give the fish time to analyze the lure before attacking, which is exactly what you need to do with certain species to trigger hits.
