New Wildcat, a kayak with two propulsion systems: pedals and propeller

A kayak with two propulsion systems, stepper and pedal, yes it's possible. A new option for the Wildcat, this is a kayak that moves with both stepper and pedal, ideal for fishing.

At the end of the summer, I presented this new 2023 model, the Wildcat, a 3m75 DIV 245 kayak with steppe propulsion. It now comes with a new option, the possibility of rigging it for pedal-propeller propulsion.

Which propulsion system is right for fishing?

When it comes to choosing the right propulsion system, many people ask whether to opt for a blade or propeller system. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages.

If you're fishing crowded waters, the blade system is a better choice. By bringing the blades under the hull, the draft is less important than with a propeller system, which requires about 60 cm of water under the hull. And if you're a long-distance sailor, the pedal system is less tiring when it comes to getting to remote spots, to give just a few examples. No need to think between the two, thanks to this option, this model can be quickly transformed into either.

The transformation is achieved by replacing the central carrier box: one is dedicated to the stepper, the other to the propeller crankset. The carrier box is fixed by 4 knurled screws, and the crankset is identical to that on the Supernova, the brand's iconic kayak of recent years. Installation takes 1 or 2 minutes: simply remove the steppe box and insert the crankset box. A plate is fitted in the dedicated slot to secure the crankset's axis of rotation. The crankset tilts on this axis between the in-water and out-of-water positions. This plate is fixed once and for all in the inserts provided, and remains in place even when the steppe box is replaced.

This set comes with the optional pedal box. This option will be available for pre-order at Christmas time. The first boxes should be delivered in January 2024. The price announced on the Galaxykayaks website is 1,699 euros for the stepper version and 1,799 euros for the pedalboard version. This adaptability will be retro-compatible with Wildcat models already on the market. In fact, I tested it with my version of Wildcat, one of the first models delivered. A box + cyclone drive crankset and fittings package will also be available at 500 euros.

Feedback

I tested this equipment in late summer and early autumn. I was also able to do a few fishing sessions with the model equipped with the crankset. Replacing the gearbox is quick and easy. The advantage of the crankset on this model is that it has a reverse gear, which makes it easier to position the boat in areas of current to get back on a drift. The fishing area remains large and practical.

Des essais concluants
Conclusive trials

Because of the crankset, I mounted the electronics on one of the side rails. I find it faster in this version, although my stepper is equipped with turbo blades. This is a very interesting option for those who want to have both propulsion systems at their disposal. In fact, it's two propelled kayaks in one for less than 2,200 euros...
