Wildcat from Galaxy Kayaks, a new stepper fishing kayak

2023 is a year of range renewal for manufacturer Galaxy Kayaks. In the powered fishing kayak category, here's the Wildcat, a stepper propulsion kayak with a few changes compared to previous models in the range.

Wildcat presentation

We're not on a big kayak here, but it's still DIV245 approved, meaning it can be registered with Affaires Maritimes for shallow water fishing, up to 6 miles from a shelter. Very few people fish that far, rarely exceeding 2 miles, but that's the way the regulations are.

The Wildact is a reasonably sized kayak:

  • Length: 3.75 m
  • Width: 0.84 m
  • Height: 0.44 m
  • Bare hull weight: 27 kg
  • Total weight with accessories: 38 kg
  • Single steppe propulsion with chain drive, no reverse gear
  • Maximum on-board weight: 180 kg

The hull design has been specially studied to make this kayak stable and efficient. The new stepper carrying box makes it easy to install and remove the stepper (see video presentation below).

Another highlight is the new seat attachment system: 4 blocks with a locking system support the seat in 2 adjustment positions. These blocks slide on rails to adjust the position according to the user's height. For taller users, additional adjustment is made by moving the arms away from the steppe.

The rudder is launched by means of a side-mounted hand lever, and is raised automatically by a return spring. As soon as the hand control is released, the rudder returns to its resting position. The steering control is ergonomically designed to fit perfectly into the hull design. The handle is in the neutral position, in line with the kayak's axis.

This kayak features a transducer well that can accommodate most of the larger transducers on the market. A perforated cover protects the well from sand and algae debris, and can be used to support the probe. The hull design allows use of the C-Tug R cart, the most suitable for this float. It lacks a lure box storage hatch in front of the seat, the space available being taken up by the new steppe carrying box. I recommend fitting a net under the seat to accommodate one or two lure boxes, as there's plenty of room for this. Its light weight makes it easy to transport on the gallery.
