Black bass is a fish that is often overlooked by anglers in winter, as this is the right season to target percids and big pike. However, if you know where to look, they can be easy to catch.

A rocky cliff

The rocky cliff is the preferred winter spot for black bass, thanks to the various advantages it offers. The verticality of the spot offers easy access to different depths, allowing the fish to choose the warmest layer of water without having to move around too much. A during this period, black bass generally remain suspended between two waters, a few meters from the rock, waiting for prey to present itself.

On sunny days, the rock stores the heat of the sun's rays and slowly diffuses it into the water. This is the best way for black bass to warm up for an afternoon and get active to feed. On the other hand, if a strong wind blows and the cold surface water is stirred up, the fish will be able to descend into the water layer and take shelter from temperature variations.

Deep tips

In many lakes, especially dam lakes, the bed of an old river can be found in the main body of water. Depending on the depth at which it is found, this river bed is an area particularly appreciated by black bass. The dream spot for them is a point adjacent to this famous bed, allowing them to rise or fall quickly to hunt in schools of white fish clustered on the same spots.

The points, however, are often rocky and difficult to fish properly because of the number of snags. Yet they are well worth fishing precisely, as they are the perfect place to find big fish. During periods of low activity, black bass are generally found on either side of the point, then move to the top at the right moment to start hunting.

Flooded cover

The cover is undoubtedly the black bass's favorite type of zone, whatever the season. However, it's not always easy to find them at the right depth. Black bass prefer bushes and fully submerged trees in about ten meters. The cover offers them both protection from other predators and, above all, an inexhaustible larder, since white fish also hide there.

This type of area is not always easy to find in lakes where the water level changes very little, but a single bush is enough to hold back a very large individual that would have fought for this ideal spot.
