The black bass presentation

From the Centrarchidae family, the black bass is a fish native to North America, it was introduced on the European continent at the end of the XIXth century e century. The black bass (Micropterus dolomieu) has an imposing head with a large mouth, hence its name of large mouth black bass. Its body is stocky and its sides are green and yellow, its lateral line is black. Sometimes a voracious predator, it feeds mainly on fish, crayfish or even frogs. In France, it is possible to catch fish up to 50 centimeters. The black bass can in some countries, especially in Spain, reach 60 centimeters for about ten kilos. Its lifespan can be around 10 years.

Presence of black bass

A species present in small bodies of water as well as in some large lakes. It can also be found in some slow flowing rivers. The black-bass does not appreciate waters that are too cold and temperatures that are too low. It is therefore much more present in the south and west of France. With the global warming, its implantation tends to evolve slowly in the north.

A reproduction period to be respected

Black bass spawn in the spring, between mid-April and late June depending on the region and the water temperature. The reproduction starts when the water temperature approaches 18 degrees. A nest of about one meter in diameter is drawn in small gravel or sand bottoms. The female will then deposit her eggs in this nest, and even in several nests which will be kept each time by a male. The latter will defend and guard the nest in an aggressive way. He will pounce on all intruders who come too close to his offspring. It is thus essential to leave this protective male alone until the moment when he will leave the nest.

The queen technique

Black bass can be fished with baits or livebaits, but it is mostly fished with lures or flies. Fishing for black bass with lures is a fishery that brings a lot of sensations. Whether it is with soft lures or swimbaits, the search for black bass quickly becomes an addiction. Fearful and intelligent fish, it is not always easy to lure big subjects. Its defense is surprising, it is capable of jumping out of the water like a real freshwater tarpon.
