The tassergal, a Mediterranean fish for thrilling fishing

The tassergal is a ferocious carnivore, a species with strange behaviors that attracts fishermen in search of strong emotions. Originally present in the warm waters of the Eastern Mediterranean, it has been approaching our shores for some years.

A streamlined body

With its streamlined body, its imposing head and its large terrifying mouth, the tassergal is easy to identify. The tassergal (Pomotamus saltatrix) can weigh up to 15 kilos and is over a meter long. With a powerful jaw and sharp canines, the tassergal must be handled with care. This fish is very present in the Mediterranean and is also found in the Bay of Biscay. The reproduction takes place in open water and then the larvae gradually approach the coast.

An insatiable predator

Equipped with a formidable dentition and capable of evolving at great speed, the tassergal is a true predator. It feeds mainly on other fish. The tassergal knows how to adapt and can also hunt mackerel, garfish or smaller fish such as anchovies. When it starts hunting, the tassergal adopts a behavior close to frenzy. It is capable of attacking anything that moves, hence its image of insatiable predator.

A pelagic fish

Like all pelagic fish, the tassergal is constantly on the move. It can travel long distances in search of food. The juveniles move in consistent school at the edge of the coasts. While the adult fish are most often in open water even if they can approach the edge in certain circumstances. The tassergal can evolve until 200 meters of depth.

The tassergal can be fished with a lure as well as with a livebait. The tracking of the tassergal, especially the beautiful subjects, is a fishing full of sensations. A fish sometimes moody, but which can offer very beautiful fights. It is not rare that once at the end of the line the tassergal makes candles between two impressive rushes.
